Athens, Greece - Former Greece international Giorgos Karagounis has announced his retirement from professional football. The 39-year-old midfielder, who won 139 caps for his country, has decided to hang up his boots in order to pursue a coaching career.

Karagounis, who played for clubs such as Panathinaikos, Inter Milan, and Fulham, was a key member of the Greece team that won the Euro 2004 championship. He also represented his country at three World Cups and two more European Championships.

In a statement released on his official website, Karagounis said: "It is with a heavy heart that I announce my retirement from football. This has been an incredibly difficult decision, but it is one that I have made after much thought.

"I have been fortunate to have had a long and successful career, and I have achieved more than I could ever have dreamed of. I am grateful to all of the clubs and managers that I have played for, and to the fans who have supported me throughout my career.

"I am now looking forward to the next chapter in my life. I am excited to start my coaching career, and I hope to be able to use my experience to help other players achieve their dreams.

Karagounis' retirement brings to an end a glittering playing career. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest Greek footballers of all time, and his legacy will live on for many years to come.
